The IRS has some useful tools on their website irs.gov. Be careful to make sure you use .gov after typing irs. Here are some of the tools:
Where’s My Refund?
To track the status of your refund after filing your individual return, click on Get your refund status. You will need:
- Your Social Security or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN)
- Your filing status
- The exact refund amount on your return
Make a Payment
You can make payments towards your current balance or prior years’ balances by clicking on the Make a payment tool. There are options to pay directly from your bank account or by credit card. However, there are fees if you pay by credit card.
Sign in to Your Account
This is one of the most useful tools at irs.gov. You can see the status of your current tax return, balance details, refund status, make payments, view payments already made, view tax records, and view notices and letters from the IRS. I highly recommend that all individual taxpayers create an account at irs.gov to easily access all of these features.
States’ Websites
The states, such as New Jersey and New York, allow you to create an online account to access similar features as the IRS website. It’s a good idea to create an account for your specific state as well.
