Do you need more time to file your individual tax return?
If you need more time to gather all of your information to file an accurate tax return, then you should file an extension by 4/15 with the IRS and any state you need to file a return for. Here’s what you need to do:
Prepare the Extension Form:
You can file an extension at the IRS’s website and some state’s websites. If you are not able to, then you can print out the forms and mail them (make sure to use certified mail and save the receipt).
Make a Payment if Necessary
If you believe you will owe, then you should make a payment to the IRS and any applicable states for the estimated amount. I highly recommend making any payments online using your online accounts or create an online account if you do not have one. A good trick is to make your first quarter estimated tax payment with the extension payment if you normally need to make estimated taxes.
Caveat
An extension request does not grant you additional time to pay your taxes but allows you additional time until October 15th to file your return.
