Diversifying your investments is a good idea, which virtually every financial advisor recommends doing. But what about diversifying your business?
Adding More Products or Services
If you add more products or services to your business then you can reach more customers, correct? That may seem to be the likely scenario, but this is what is most likely to happen:
- Your main products and services suffer because attention is being diverted somewhere else.
- The new products or services don’t receive the proper amount of time and attention, which ends up causing it to fail.
There are situations when it makes sense to add new products and services, but not often.
Starting Another Business
The same applies to starting another business. Unless the new business is complimentary to your existing business, the activities of the new business will most likely not be profitable. Unfortunately, it will also take away from your existing business and reduce your profits further.
The Excitement Factor
It’s very exciting to add more products/services or start a new business, but do not let that excitement detract from your core business.
