The IRS has made taxpayers aware of popular scams on their website, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Charity Impersonators<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make sure the charity you are donating to is legitimate, then you can use the tax exempt organization search function at https:\/\/apps.irs.gov\/app\/eos\/ Unfortunately, a contribution to a fake charity is not tax deductible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dishonest Tax Preparers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do not trust a tax preparer who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Doesn\u2019t sign the return<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Falsifies tax information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Puts your refund in their bank account<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Requires you to pay in cash or doesn\u2019t give you a receipt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Email and Text Message Impersonators<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IRS will only email or text you with your permission, with a few exceptions, such as criminal investigations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Seniors Beware<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Scammers are always targeting seniors and not just for tax scams. They trick seniors into withdrawing from their retirement accounts, which can also create a tax liability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social Media<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with virtually all advice on social media, it can be bad and misleading.
